[English]

This study aims to elucidate the dimensions of place identity in traditional Iranian architecture by utilizing theoretical frameworks of environmental psychology. The present study was designed using a mixed-methods (qualitative-quantitative) approach, specifically a sequential exploratory design. In the qualitative phase, data were collected through systematic observation and semi-structured interviews with 15 architecture experts and regular visitors to Vakil Mosque, and subsequently analyzed using thematic analysis. In the quantitative phase, a researcher-developed questionnaire, based on the qualitative findings, was administered to 284 visitors of Vakil Mosque in Shiraz. The content validity of the instrument was confirmed with a Content Validity Index (CVI) of 0.87, and its reliability was established using Cronbach’s alpha (α = 0.82). Data were analyzed using SPSS software, employing Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses. Qualitative analysis yielded four main themes (spatial-sensory perception, cultural-religious meaning-making, social interactions, and emotional attachment to place) and 12 sub-themes. Quantitative findings revealed a significant positive correlation between environmental psychology components (natural lighting, geometric patterns, symmetry, and green spaces) and place identity (p < 0.01). The correlation coefficient between aesthetic perception and place attachment was 0.58, and between cultural meaning-making and place identity, it was 0.62. The regression model demonstrated that these variables collectively explain 47% of the variance in place identity. In Conclusion, Traditional Iranian architecture, through the intelligent integration of physical and semantic elements, provides a conducive environment for the formation of place identity. Applying environmental psychology frameworks in the analysis of historical buildings can lead to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying identity formation.
